BAJA + THE DRY EYE CREW!

WAR CHILD
"Left home at the age of seven/one year later I'm carryin' an Ak-47." In this documentary we meet hip hop artist Emmanuel Jal, a former child soldier in Sudan's brutal civil war, for whom these lyrics are hardly empty posturing. They are the bitter reality of a young man who was "forced to sin" but determined to "never give up and never give in.

BAJAH & THE DRY EYE CREW After packing the national stadium for Hailing from Sierra Leone, this group has generated so much buzz in the hip-hop world that major stars including ?uestlove and Black Thought of the Roots, Talib Kweli, K'Naan, Res, and El-P have contributed their vocal and/or production talents to their upcoming release. After packing the national stadium for performances in their home country of Sierra Leone and contributing music to the Academy Award–nominated film Blood Diamond, African superstars Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew are poised to conquer the global airwaves with their international debut album (due out in fall 2009) and their unique sound, which blends the swagger and funk of hip-hop, the passion and energy of dancehall, and the socially conscious vibe of reggae.

I'm Through With White Girls

Directed by Jennifer Sharp
120 minutes, 2007

Jay Brooks is that black guy who digs indie rock, graphic novels, and dates white chicks. After a slew of bad break-ups, Jay gives up white women, "cold turkey," and he goes on a mission: "Operation Brown Sugar". But because Jay doesn't fit the "brotha" stereotype, he fails miserably with the "sistahs." Then he meets the dynamic Catherine, a misunderstood "Half-rican Canadian", who's as righteously quirky as he is. To win her heart, Jay must confront his fears as he realizes commitment is a bigger issue than race. I'M THROUGH WITH WHITE GIRLS is a quirky romantic-comedy addressing race, class, and cultural identity in America.
